Moments in Time 1989/1990

May 1 to November 9, 2009

Which images have Germans kept to remind them of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Wall? Which images of November 9, 1989 went around the world on international television? And which images were sought and found by documentary filmmakers for this period?
From the first protests against fraud in the local elections of the GDR in May 1989 to the first all-German elections for the Bundestag on October 3, 1990, nobody had any idea how things would turn out. The many films, photographs, and recollections of those involved in events or who simply observed them reveal this uncertainty. They document surprising moments, as well as elated and sceptical voices. For all their diversity, however, they have one thing in common: a boundless delight in the newly gained freedom.
Based on snapshots, and footage from television and film, the exhibition “Moments in Time 1989/1990” presents the wealth of images generated by the turn of events between May 1989 and December 1990.
Also after the exhibition, this collection of private snapshots and films will be accessible for all kinds of queries online at www.wir-waren-so-frei.de – our permanent database.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung). And thanks to a decision of the German Bundestag, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (der Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien) is funding the project.
